Life has taken me down many different paths, some beautiful and others incredibly difficult. Those experiences have shaped who I am today, but they don’t define everything I am.

I’m a mother, partner, writer and creator. I love beauty, music, creativity and building things that can help others. At the same time, I know what it feels like when life doesn’t go the way you expected, when you have to start over and when you have to learn to listen to yourself.

That’s exactly why so much of what I do revolves around one thought: you don’t have to be just one version of yourself. You’re allowed to grow, change, start again and embrace different sides of yourself at the same time.

My story isn’t perfect. It’s real. And on this website, there’s room for all those different chapters. 💗

My Family & Who I Am at Home+

Behind everything you see here on my website, I’m first and foremost Deborah. Kevin’s partner and a mother of three children: Mylo, Eloy and Ayline. My family is an incredibly important part of who I am, but also of the way I’ve built my life and my work.

Life at our house isn’t always calm or perfectly organised. It’s a home filled with children, school, sports, appointments, piles of laundry, cooking, laughter, discussions, cuddles and plans that regularly turn out completely different from what we had in mind. Somewhere in between, you’ll find me behind my computer, creating content, writing, working on new ideas and building my own business from home.

Those two worlds aren’t separate for me. My children are growing up seeing that their mum has dreams and goals of her own. That despite challenges, I keep looking at what is possible, try new things and work towards building something that fits both me and our family.

As a mother, I think it’s important that my children know they’re allowed to be completely themselves. That making mistakes is part of life, that their feelings are allowed to be there and that their worth never depends on achievements or perfection. I want to give them a safe foundation, while also showing them that you don’t have to lose yourself while taking care of others.

Kevin and I are the foundation of our family together. We’ve shared beautiful moments and faced plenty of challenges too. Maybe that’s exactly why I appreciate the ordinary moments so much: having dinner together, putting on some music, playing a game, laughing uncontrollably about something or simply all being home together.

Home is where all the different sides of me come together. I’m a mum and partner, but also a creator, writer, entrepreneur and simply Deborah. Sometimes all within the same hour. 😉 It isn’t always perfect or organised, but it’s our life, and there’s an incredible amount of love in it. ❤️

Living with Invisible Battles+

Not everything someone carries with them every day is visible on the outside. I know that from personal experience. I live with several physical and mental health challenges, including FND, migraine, PTSD and borderline personality disorder. In addition, I experience physical symptoms that I’m still searching for answers to.

Perhaps the way I deal with these challenges makes my battles even more invisible sometimes. I don’t easily show when I’m in pain. I don’t want people to feel sorry for me or to only see the things I can’t do. Asking for help, and especially actually accepting it, is difficult for me. I’m used to looking for solutions myself and staying as independent as possible.

But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. There are days when my body simply doesn’t cooperate, when plans have to change or when something I could do yesterday suddenly isn’t possible today. But I’m not someone who gives up, sits in a corner crying and feels sorry for myself. That isn’t going to make my situation any better.

I’d rather take the bull by the horns and focus on what is possible. Can’t I do something today? Okay, maybe I can tomorrow. Does a plan need to change? Then we’ll find another way. Setbacks are allowed to affect me, and of course I have moments when I feel angry, sad or frustrated too. Staying positive doesn’t mean denying those feelings. To me, it means trying not to stay stuck in them.

That’s why acceptance and mindset are so important to me. I’ve learned that accepting something is completely different from giving up. To me, acceptance means: this is the situation I’m dealing with today. I can spend all my energy fighting the fact that this is my reality, or I can use that energy to figure out how to deal with it and focus on what I can still do.

That applies to my physical health challenges, but also to borderline personality disorder. Acceptance and mindset have made an enormous difference for me personally. I’ve learned to understand myself better, recognise my patterns and triggers, and take responsibility for the things I can influence. As a result, I now have my borderline personality disorder under control without medication.

Interestingly, when people have known me for a while and I tell them that I’ve been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, they often find it hard to understand. They never noticed it at all, and it doesn’t fit the image they have of someone with borderline personality disorder. To me, that shows exactly how little a diagnosis ultimately says about the person behind it.

Borderline personality disorder is something I live with, but it doesn’t determine how I function every day, and it certainly doesn’t define who I am. That doesn’t mean there are never emotions, triggers or difficult moments. It means that I understand myself much better now. I recognise what’s happening, know better how to respond to it and have learned how to bring myself back into balance.

And perhaps that’s exactly one of the reasons why I want to be open about it. There are still so many misconceptions and prejudices surrounding borderline personality disorder. The word alone can make people form a certain image of someone. But a diagnosis doesn’t tell you what someone is like as a mother, partner, friend, entrepreneur or person. Get to know the person first, and only then look at the label.

To me, mindset absolutely does not mean that you can think yourself healthy. FND, migraine, trauma or other physical and mental health conditions don’t disappear simply because you think positively enough. It just isn’t that simple. But I do believe that the way you deal with these challenges can have a huge impact on how you live your life.

Some days, I can do an incredible amount. I take care of my family, work on my business from home, write, create content and have my head full of new ideas. On other days, I have to take a step back. And even then, you won’t always be able to see how much pain I’m in or how much effort something takes. A smile doesn’t mean someone isn’t in pain, and carrying on doesn’t mean it’s easy.

Accepting help is also part of that learning process for me. I still find it difficult. But I’m gradually learning that being strong doesn’t mean you have to do everything on your own. Sometimes setting a boundary, taking time to rest or allowing someone to help you is exactly what enables you to keep going afterwards.

My Invisible Battles are part of my life, but they are not my life. I’m a mother, partner, creator, writer, entrepreneur and so much more. There is room for pain and frustration, but also for humour, ambition, dreams, joy and growth.

For me, Invisible Battles ultimately isn’t about wanting people to feel sorry for me. Quite the opposite. It’s about acknowledging that life can sometimes be incredibly difficult without losing yourself in it. It’s about accepting what you can’t change today, taking the bull by the horns when it comes to the things you can influence, and continuing to focus on what is possible.

Maybe today it isn’t possible. Tomorrow is a new day. And then I’ll look again at what is possible. ❤️

My Journey as a Creator & Entrepreneur+

My journey as an entrepreneur began much earlier than most people probably realise. In 2008, when I was 18 years old, I took my first steps into the world of MLM with FM. I loved the idea of having my own business and building something for myself, but it wasn’t easy. On the street where I lived alone, it felt like there were probably twenty people doing FM. I had a few customers and eventually stayed with it for about five years, until 2013.

There was another issue too: I turned out to be allergic to perfume. Not exactly ideal when a large part of your business revolves around fragrance. Because of that, my final years with FM became increasingly difficult, and eventually I decided to stop.

But that didn’t make my entrepreneurial side disappear.

In the years between FM and Younique, I also worked as a nail stylist. So beauty and creativity have actually been part of my life for a very long time. I loved creating something with my hands and making people happy with the end result.

Eventually, I had to face reality there too. Working as a nail stylist turned out to be too physically demanding for me, while at the same time the competition was incredibly tough. As much as I loved the work, I had to accept that it simply wasn’t sustainable for me in the long run.

Looking back, I can see a pattern that has returned throughout my entrepreneurial journey. Stopping something doesn’t automatically mean giving up on entrepreneurship. Sometimes it means recognising that a certain path no longer fits my life and then finding another way that does work.

In 2020, I decided to step back into the world of MLM and joined Younique. This time, my life looked completely different. By then, I was a mother of three young children and built my business from home, fitting it around family life.

I never built a huge team of my own at Younique, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t achieve anything. In my very first year, for example, I managed to earn the incentive trip to Punta Cana, something I’m still incredibly proud of. It showed me what can be possible when I truly set my mind to something.

My years with Younique taught me an incredible amount, but they also came with plenty of ups and downs. I had several different uplines, and not every environment or leadership style turned out to be the right fit for me. Still, I kept going. Because what always appealed to me wasn’t just beauty or selling products. It was the community, connecting with people, helping each other, growing together and the feeling of being part of something.

During my years with Younique, I also explored other opportunities. One of them was Victoria. That actually went quite well and once again showed me how much I enjoy building relationships with customers and growing a business of my own. Unfortunately, things happened within the team that I personally couldn’t stand behind. For me, it isn’t just about products and results. The people, the way they treat each other and the values within a team matter just as much. That’s why I eventually decided to step away.

I also spent some time with Scentsy. This time, the problem was completely different. I kept running into issues with deliveries through UPS and simply couldn’t receive my parcels properly. And how are you supposed to enthusiastically show and sell products to others when you can’t even receive them yourself? In the end, something that should have been purely logistical made it practically impossible for me to run my business properly.

All of those experiences have made it increasingly clear to me what I need in order to truly stand behind something. A good product alone isn’t enough. The community has to feel right, the support needs to be there, the logistics have to work, and a company needs to understand what it actually takes to do business in the market you’re operating in.

In March 2026, my entrepreneurial journey changed once again when Younique transitioned to Curated. This gave me the opportunity to work with several amazing brands, something I can definitely see the benefits of. But at the same time, I felt that a large part of what had always attracted me to this way of doing business disappeared.

The community changed, the traditional MLM structure disappeared, and I increasingly missed the feeling of truly building something together with other people. I missed guiding and helping others, and growing together.

On the Dutch market, I’ve also been running into the same challenges for years. Since 2022, I’ve been trying to draw attention to things that, in my opinion, are essential if you genuinely want to grow in the Netherlands: a website that is properly available in Dutch, payment methods that Dutch customers know and trust, and simply an experience that fits our market.

Over the years, I raised these issues with Younique several times, but the changes I had hoped for never came. Even after the transition to Curated, many of those challenges still remain.

Of the Dutch group that once consisted of hundreds of people, I’m now the only one still active. There is also a large Polish community in the Netherlands that continues to sell, but of course, that doesn’t automatically lead to the changes needed for the company to better meet the needs of Dutch customers and creators.

For a long time, I kept going despite everything. I didn’t want to simply close the door on something I had invested so many years, so much time, energy and love into. I kept hoping that the Dutch market would eventually receive the attention and support I had been asking for for years.

But perseverance doesn’t mean you have to hold on forever.

Eventually, I realised that I had lost something that is essential for me to be able to represent a company or brand with genuine conviction: my motivation and my trust.

More and more of the products and shades that I genuinely believed in, and that customers specifically came back for, disappeared or changed. At the same time, the challenges I had been facing in the Dutch market for years remained. Eventually, I had to ask myself an honest question: how much longer do I want to keep pulling at something that, deep down, I no longer believe is going to change?

As I sometimes say: I can’t keep flogging a dead horse.

That doesn’t mean I look back on my years with Younique with regret. Absolutely not. Those years gave me so much. I achieved things I never thought I was capable of, grew both as a person and as an entrepreneur, and built friendships that mean far more to me than the name of any company ever could.

So I’m not saying goodbye to everything that chapter has given me. I’m saying goodbye to a company and a business model that no longer fully align with who I am.

And perhaps that’s part of being an entrepreneur too: not only knowing when to keep going, but also having the courage to recognise when it’s time to let go.

What comes next doesn’t need to be decided straight away. I’m not going to look for just another company because I feel like there’s a gap that needs to be filled. By now, my entrepreneurial journey is about so much more. I create content, write, develop my own projects, have published my ebook Return to Yourself: A Journey Back to the Person You Were Always Meant to Be, and I’m building this website under my own name.

At the same time, I’m excited about MeAmora and still hope that the brand will come to the Netherlands one day. I’m learning more about the Dutch beauty market, thinking about localisation and what Dutch customers and future stylists would need. But whether that happens soon, a few years from now or perhaps not at all, I don’t need to make my entire future depend on it.

When I look back on my entrepreneurial journey, there’s one common thread running through it all. From FM to my work as a nail stylist, from Younique and the other opportunities I explored along the way to where I am today: I keep looking for ways to combine my creativity, love for beauty, desire to help people and entrepreneurial spirit in a way that also fits my life.

Not every path turned out to be the right one. Sometimes it was because of my health, sometimes because of a team, sometimes because of logistics, and sometimes a company or opportunity simply changed into something I no longer recognised myself in. But every experience has taught me something about what matters to me and, perhaps even more importantly, what I’m no longer willing to compromise on.

A company can change. A product can disappear. A team can fall apart, and an opportunity can stop being the right fit for you. But the knowledge, experience, creativity, perseverance, self-worth and friendships I’ve built along the way will always be mine.

If the path I’m on no longer works, it doesn’t mean I have to give up on my destination.

Sometimes stopping isn’t giving up. Sometimes it simply means it’s time to choose a different path. ❤️

Why I Write+

Writing is so much more to me than simply putting words on paper. It’s a way to organise my thoughts, give my experiences a place and find the words for things that can sometimes be difficult to explain.

Life hasn’t always been easy for me. I’ve been through things that have shaped me, and today I live with several Invisible Battles. But I don’t want my story to be defined only by what happened to me or by the diagnoses that can be placed next to my name. Everything I’ve been through has taught me just how powerful recognition, openness and the feeling that you’re not alone can be.

And that’s an important reason why I write.

Sometimes you can spend years thinking you’re the only one who feels a certain way, struggles with something or reacts in a particular way. Until someone else says the exact words you were never able to find yourself. Suddenly, you think: yes, that’s it. Someone understands.

If my words can mean that to even one person, then they already have value to me.

That’s why I also write about topics that aren’t always easy to talk about. Invisible illnesses, mental health, trauma, motherhood, relationships, boundaries, losing yourself and finding your way back to who you are. But also about dreams, personal growth, love, entrepreneurship and finding the courage to start again.

I also think it’s important not to show only the beautiful, perfect version of life. Social media is already full of picture-perfect moments. Real life also has messy days, sadness, frustration, doubt and moments when you have no idea how to move forward. That doesn’t mean there’s no room for positivity. To me, those two things can exist side by side.

You can be grateful and still feel sad about something. You can be strong and still have a bad day. You can love your life and still wish certain things were different.

Finding yourself again is also a very important theme in my writing. We often play so many roles in other people’s lives: mother, partner, friend, daughter, colleague, entrepreneur, or whatever your roles may be. Before you know it, you’re so busy taking care of others, meeting expectations and simply carrying on that you barely know who you are anymore.

That eventually became the foundation for my first ebook, Return to Yourself: A Journey Back to the Person You Were Always Meant to Be.

That title and subtitle actually capture exactly what the book means to me. It’s not about becoming someone else. It’s not about completely reinventing yourself. It’s about allowing yourself to find your way back to the person you were always meant to be, underneath all the expectations, experiences, pain and responsibilities that have built up over the course of your life.

I also write because I believe stories can help open up conversations about difficult subjects. My own experiences have shown me what silence can do. That’s why I feel it’s important to use my voice to talk about topics such as sexual abuse, trauma and the things people sometimes carry with them in silence for years.

Not because I want people to feel sorry for me. Quite the opposite. I want to show that what someone has been through can be part of their story without having to define the rest of it.

I can’t change the past. I can’t simply write my diagnoses away, and I can’t promise that my words will solve someone else’s problems. That isn’t my goal either.

What I can do is share my experiences, thoughts and lessons. Maybe someone will recognise a part of themselves in them. Maybe one sentence will give someone exactly the little push they need. Maybe it will make someone feel a little less alone. Or perhaps my story will simply make someone look at their own life from a different perspective.

And sometimes, of course, I simply write because I enjoy it. 😉 Not every story has to be heavy. I love developing ideas, sharing knowledge, writing about beauty and lifestyle, and turning something that once existed only in my head into something tangible.

That’s also what I love so much about writing. There doesn’t have to be just one side of me. The woman who writes about trauma can be the same woman who gets excited about a new mascara. The mother who shares the chaos of family life can also dream about her next project. And the woman who knows what it’s like to live with Invisible Battles can, at the same time, try to inspire others.

Writing gives me the freedom to bring all those different sides of myself together.

Beauty, creativiteit & wat mij blij maakt+

Beauty has been a common thread throughout my life for a very long time. From my time as a nail stylist to makeup, skincare, haircare and everything I do as a creator today. But to me, beauty is never just about looking beautiful. It’s also a form of creativity, self-expression and sometimes simply a little moment for myself.

I can genuinely get excited about a beautiful lipstick, a mascara that makes my lashes look exactly the way I want them to, a new skincare formula or a set of press-on nails that makes me think after applying them: yessss, look at these! 😉 I love trying out products, looking at ingredients, discovering the differences and then sharing my experience with others.

And no, that definitely doesn’t mean I have to walk around fully made up every single day.

Sometimes beauty means a full makeup look, while on another day it’s simply skincare, lip balm and getting my hair to look somewhat presentable. For me, it’s much more about how something can make you feel than the idea that you need makeup to be beautiful.

Makeup isn’t a mask to me. It’s something I can play with.

The same goes for my hair. I’ve had different colours over the years and I love experimenting with it. Sometimes natural, sometimes a little different, and sometimes I think: well, why not? Beauty doesn’t have to follow all kinds of rules for me. If something makes you happy and allows you to be yourself, that’s ultimately far more important.

My love for creativity goes far beyond beauty too. I’m pretty much always coming up with something. Content for social media, reels, graphics, an ebook, this website, a presentation, a new digital product, or yet another idea that I tell myself I’ll just quickly work on, only to find myself still working on it hours later. 😂

I love starting with nothing more than an idea and slowly watching something take shape. A few words become a piece of writing. A thought becomes a concept. A blank design comes to life with colours, images and its own unique style. And sometimes, a small idea suddenly grows into an entirely new project.

That creative process genuinely makes me happy.

Maybe that also explains why I have so many different interests. I don’t have to choose between beauty, writing, entrepreneurship or creating. To me, those things actually complement each other. Beauty gives me an outlet for my creativity. Creating content allows me to share my ideas. Writing gives me the opportunity to explore things on a deeper level. And as an entrepreneur, I can bring all those different things together.

But the things that make me happy definitely aren’t limited to my work or big projects.

More often than not, it’s found in the ordinary things. Spending time with my family, putting on music and singing along far too loudly, laughing together, playing a game, enjoying good food, having a meaningful conversation, or simply one of those moments when everyone is home and nothing particularly special is happening at all.

I love dreaming and making new plans, but I also try to appreciate the little moments that are already here.

And humour is definitely part of that for me. My life can be serious enough as it is. My Invisible Battles don’t disappear, and there are plenty of responsibilities and things to worry about. That’s exactly why I think it’s important to make room for laughter, being silly, getting excited about things and sometimes not taking myself seriously at all.

I think that’s ultimately part of what beauty and creativity give me too. They give me something that doesn’t always have to be heavy or complicated. Something I can play with, express myself through and simply allow myself to enjoy.

I don’t always have to turn everything into a deeper life lesson. Sometimes something is allowed to simply be fun.

Because alongside everything I’ve been through, everything I live with and everything I still want to achieve, I’m also simply a woman who can find happiness in her family, music, a new idea, a beautiful makeup look, anything pink, being creative and probably having far too many projects going on at the same time. 😉❤️

What I Stand For+

If there’s one thing that connects all the different sides of my life, it’s my values. Whether I’m being a mother, writing, creating content, building my business, talking about my Invisible Battles or simply helping someone with something small, ultimately I always want to be able to look myself in the mirror and know that I stayed true to who I am.

Honesty is incredibly important to me. I don’t believe in pretending that everything is perfect when it isn’t. Not online, not in business and not in everyday life. That doesn’t mean everyone needs to know everything about me, but what I choose to share has to be real.

I also strongly believe in respect and equality. I don’t care where someone comes from, what they look like, who they love, how much they earn, what education they have or what challenges they carry with them. No one is worth more than anyone else. Everyone deserves to be seen and treated as a human being.

Tolerance is also an important part of that for me. We don’t all have to think the same way, make the same choices or live the same kind of life in order to treat each other with respect. Differences are allowed to exist. In fact, I think the world would be incredibly boring if we were all the same.

Justice is something that runs deep within me. When I see something unfair happening or someone being treated badly, I find it difficult to simply look the other way. Maybe that makes my life a little more complicated sometimes, because keeping quiet when something doesn’t feel right to me definitely isn’t one of my strongest qualities. 😉

But I believe that change is only possible when people are willing to use their voice.

At the same time, I strongly believe in kindness and empathy. You never fully know what someone is going through behind closed doors. The person you pass in the supermarket, the mother at the school gates, someone who seems happy online or someone who may respond a little abruptly could be fighting a battle you know absolutely nothing about.

A little more understanding can sometimes make a bigger difference than we realise.

Freedom is also incredibly important to me. The freedom to be yourself, make your own choices, pursue your own dreams and shape your life in a way that feels right for you. As long as your freedom doesn’t come at the expense of someone else, I believe no one else should get to decide what your life should look like.

And perhaps, in the end, love is at the heart of everything. Love for my family and the people around me, but also love in a much broader sense. Looking out for one another. Giving people a safe space. Helping each other whenever we can. Not judging someone straight away when you don’t know their story.

I believe in peace, safety, equality and a world where people don’t have to prove that they are worthy of being treated with respect.

That doesn’t mean I always do everything perfectly, of course. Absolutely not. I make mistakes, I can be stubborn, I sometimes react from a place of emotion, and I’m still learning every day. To me, standing for something isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being willing to look at yourself, take responsibility when you’re wrong and continue to grow.

Maybe, in the end, it all comes down to this:

Be yourself. Treat people the way people deserve to be treated. Don’t judge a story when you’ve only read one page. Stand up for what is right. Dare to use your voice. Keep learning. Keep growing. And never lose your humanity along the way.

That is what I want to stand for.

Not only through the words on this website, but above all through the way I try to live my life. ❤️

This is me. ❤️

Not one label, one role or one chapter of my life. Just Deborah, with a head full of ideas, a heart full of love, big dreams, a healthy dose of chaos and probably always something new I’ve enthusiastically started working on. 😉

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a little better. ❤️

Hi, ik ben Deborah Welkom op mijn plekje online.
